Converted East Hampton Potato Barn Makes for a Stylish Home

East Hampton Village boasts what is surely one of the loveliest and most idyllic main streets in the entire United States. In addition to the high-end boutiques and eateries, there's a pond with ducks and swans, a preserved farm with its original windmill, an ancient cemetery, numerous charming inns, majestic churches, and beautifully preserved houses, some of which date back to the 17th century.

The village also boasts more than 200 American elms, which create fluttering canopies over the village's charming streets. One of these streets, Buell Lane, is stately and peaceful, while also easily walkable to the middle of town. This is where famous chef Ina Garten lives and maintains a huge garden, and it's where the late ad executive Lois Wyse used to reside. It was she who came up with the still-in-use slogan, "With a name like Smucker's, it has to be good", as well as many other well-known ad campaigns. She also wrote many books.

Wyse's East Hampton getaway, known as Graybarn Cottage, was converted in 1969 from an old potato barn. Over the years, the cottage has been renovated and updated, most notably in 2011, when a sensitive restoration was done. Now, the property is for sale, asking $4.5 million with Sarah Minardi at Saunders & Associates.

Tucked away privately on a 0.4-acre parcel, the home boasts a barn-sized 4,750 square feet of living space. There's a three-bedroom, three-bath main house with a full basement, plus a one bedroom, one bath carriage house with a living room.

Painted floors and exposed wood walls reflect the building's humble beginnings, while the exposed wood ceiling soars grandly over the great room's living and dining spaces. In front of the oversized stone fireplace is the perfect place to curl up with a book any time of year, and a wide mezzanine loft with built-in bookshelves is ideal for a home office, exercise area or overflow guests. Capacious but short of unnecessarily enormous, the perfectly sized kitchen is configured around a double-wide island. The main house's primary bedroom is adjacent to the fantastic library, and the primary suite in each of the residences offers a bathroom complete with glass and marble steam shower and soaking tub.

Exterior amenities include mahogany decking and a 40-foot-long saltwater pool with retractable cover. There's also a spa, an outdoor shower, a gas BBQ, and parking for six cars. And just to make everything as easy as possible for a next owner, the house is offered fully furnished. Just turn the key and start enjoyment.

Best of all, perhaps, it's located at the peaceful edge of one of the most postcard-ready downtown districts in the country.
