110m historic sailing yacht Sea Cloud begins extensive rebuild

The 109.5-metre historic Krupp Germaniawerft sailing yacht Sea Cloud is currently undergoing an extensive rebuild in Valletta, Malta.

reviously known as Hussar and constructed in 1931 for American heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and financier Edward Francis Hutton, the rebuild of Sea Cloud aims to return the sailing yacht to her original glory, with Yanova appointed as owner's representatives for the project.

"We enjoy new-builds and challenging refits," explained Daniel Küpfer, Founder of Yanova. "A rebuild programme such as Sea Cloud is a great privilege to be part of and a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

The rebuild of Sea Cloud began in November 2025 and involves a full modernisation of all machinery and technical systems, including new main engines and generators, in compliance with the latest environmental standards, alongside restoring her superstructure, rigging, and deck layout to their authentic 1930s appearance.

Sea Cloud will also be upgraded to current safety regulations, with new crew accommodation fitted to contemporary superyacht standards and a detailed restoration of her owner and guest suites to preserve her character and elegance.

"Extensive research has gone into her past and her truly authentic appearance," added Küpfer. "We are pleased to bring experience from other large yacht restoration programmes to this project. Such classic projects pose very specific challenges, which we approach with great respect for the vessel, her history and her long-term future."

Managed by Sea Cloud Cruises under the direction of Managing Director Adam Pazdzioch, once completed, Sea Cloud will return to the luxury cruise and charter market with a reduced guest complement of 20 and a guest-to-service ratio of 1:3.
